Sun, wind and waves – Schleswig-Holstein is worth a trip at any time of year. Germany ’s northernmost state combines fresh air, nature, culture and exciting activities. Each of the individual regions – North Sea, Baltic Sea, inland, Holsteinische Schweiz (Holstein Switzerland ) and the Duchy of Lauenburg – has its own special attraction:

The Baltic coast is a destination for families and couples, for those who want to enjoy and discover. From Lübeck to Flensburg , there is one sea resort after another along nearly 400km of coastline. Cliffs give way to sandy bays, cosy fishing villages to lively towns. The proximity to the Baltic Sea make the hilly lakeland of Holsteinische Schweiz so attractive to holidaymakers. Lying amid the varied landscape are estates, castles, manor houses and old villages, all of which are best discovered on bicycle.

Where the rhythm of daily life is determined by the ebb and flow of the tide, there lies the North Sea coast with its islands and holms. Schleswig-Holstein’s Wadden Sea National Park is unique with its extensive mud flats, which dry out when the tide is out and become filled with tidal creeks like a wide river network.

The Midland lies between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea . Far from the madding crowd, visitors can stroll through small, traditional towns or discover river meadows, moorland and heathland. Walkers and cyclists love the varied landscape with its fields and meadows which glow sunshine yellow and lush green when the rapeseed is in bloom in spring.

The Duchy of Lauenburg has three main areas of attraction: The Alte Salzstraße, a former Hanseatic League trade route which is today a cycle path, the Lauenburgische Seen/Schaalsee Nature Park and finally the Elbe – one of the most beautiful river landscapes in Europe .

Take a trip back to the Middle Ages in Lübeck or enjoy a day’s shopping in Kiel : Schleswig-Holstein has many large and small historical cities with plenty of history, offering an attractive and colourful mixture of culture and entertainment. Whether it is fancy boutiques or chic galleries, the towns offer plenty of opportunities for undisturbed strolling.
